The Union Army won the third battle of Winchester, Virginia, in September, 1864. In doing so, the Union secured the Shenandoah Valley , making the outcome of the entire war inevitable. William Knowlton, a Maine officer, participated in the first battle of Winchester. He returned to fight in the third battle -- a fight he sensed would result in his death.
We honor the life and legacy of Nicholas “Nick” Picerno. Nick was a historian, preservationist, and friend. Nick dedicated his life to uncovering and preserving the stories of Maine’s Civil War soldiers, especially those of the 1st, 10th, and 29th Maine Infantry regiments. His tireless work in battlefield preservation and education ensured that the sacrifices of the past will never be forgotten.
In this video, we revisit one of the stories Nick was most proud to share that of Major William Knowlton of the 29th Maine Regiment.
May Nick’s passion continue to inspire all who value history, memory, and preservation. Godspeed, Nick.
