After crushing Pemberton at the Battles of Champion Hill and Big Black River Bridge, Major General Ulysses S. Grant drives his Army of Tennessee across the Big Black towards the city that has, since the beginning of the war, thwarted every attempt to be captured by the Federals: Vicksburg. Once near the outskirts of Vicksburg, Grant prepares his men to assault the extensive earthworks the rebels have been constructing. Meanwhile, inside the threatened city, Pemberton, who watched his defeated Army of Mississippi be herded into the river bastion following their two crushing defeats, anxiously waits for Grant's blue horde to assail his position. With General Joseph E. Johnston gathering a relief army only 60 miles away in Canton. Both commanders know if Grant wants to take Vicksburg, he will have to attack and attack soon. Therefore, during the next month, Grant will do whatever it takes to break into one of the most heavily fortified bastions on the North American Continent.
