The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House (May 8–21, 1864) was a brutal fight between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee during the Overland Campaign. Heavy trench fighting and the savage combat at the “Bloody Angle” led to massive casualties, but no clear winner.
