King Charles I The Trial & Execution With (Mark Turnbull)
1h 15m
Daz is joined by historian & author Mark Turnbull and discuss one of the most important events in British history.
After the English Civil War, Parliament concluded that peace was impossible while Charles I lived, especially after he secretly encouraged a second war in 1648. In January 1649, he was put on trial by the Rump Parliament before a specially created High Court of Justice, accused of treason for waging war against his own people. Charles refused to recognise the court’s authority and did not enter a plea. He was found guilty and executed by beheading on 30 January 1649, an unprecedented act that abolished the monarchy and led to the creation of the Commonwealth.
