The RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, in the North Atlantic Ocean. At the time, it was the largest ocean liner in service. Titanic was four days into her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, with an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at 11:40 PM ship's time on April 14. She sank two hours and forty minutes later, at 2:20 AM ship's time (5:18 AM GMT) on April 15. The disaster resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.
