The Battles of New Market Heights and Fort Harrison, fought on September 29–30, 1864, were important engagements during the Siege of Petersburg Union forces launched a major offensive against Confederate positions east of Richmond, capturing Fort Harrison and breaking through parts of the Confederate defensive line. The fighting at New Market Heights was particularly significant for the participation and heavy losses of United States Coloured Troops, whose actions demonstrated their effectiveness and courage in battle.
