The First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas), fought on 21 July 1861, included thousands of European-born soldiers on both the Union and Confederate sides. Many were recent immigrants from Ireland, Germany, England, Scotland, France, and other nations who had settled in America before the war. They served in both ethnic regiments and mixed units, bringing valuable military experience and playing an important role in the first major battle of the American Civil War.
