On or about December 16, 1863, Pvt. Jackson O. Bashears of the 65th Indiana Infantry fell into enemy hands at the tail end of the Knoxville Campaign in Eastern Tennessee. Carried by his captors to Richmond and held at Belle Isle, he suffered severely from exposure. Here's his story, in his own words.
