The Battle of Wilson’s Creek, fought on August 10, 1861, was one of the first major battles of the American Civil War west of the Mississippi River. Union forces under Nathaniel Lyon attacked Confederate and Missouri State Guard forces near Springfield, Missouri. The Union was defeated, and Lyon was killed—the first Union general killed in the Civil War.
