During the Atlanta Campaign, near Marietta at Pine Mountain, a reconnaissance by Confederate generals Joe Johnston, William J. Hardee, and Leonidas Polk attracted enemy artillery fire. Cannon shot landed with deadly accuracy in the midst of the generals and their staffs.
