Through an intricate analysis of the several versions edited from 1917 through 1926, O’Grady discovered where clips and frames were lost when Griffith removed scenes, and then added them again, in order to take full advantage of the film’s marketing potential. The alterations effected the film’s timing and clarity because small portions of the master print were sacrificed in each edit. John O’Grady identified – and found – each of those edits and replaced the missing pieces, bringing the movie back to its original look and pacing.
