Fought on 18 June 1815 near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, the battle was one of the most significant military engagements in European history. It saw an Allied army led by Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington face the French forces of Napoleon Bonaparte. The decisive Allied victory ended Napoleon's rule and brought an end to more than two decades of conflict across Europe.
