The Battle of Great Torrington (1646) marked one of the final blows to the Royalist cause in the West Country during the English Civil War. As Sir Thomas Fairfax’s New Model Army stormed the town, fierce fighting and a devastating gunpowder explosion forced Lord Hopton’s Royalists into retreat, hastening the collapse of Royalist resistance in the West.
