Daz is once again joined by historian of the American Revolutionary War, Mark Maloy, to discuss the Declaration of Independence. As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of this historic document, they explore the events leading to its adoption, its significance in 1776, and its lasting impact on history.
The Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Second Continental Congress on 4 July 1776, announced that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject to British rule and were now free and independent states. Principally written by Thomas Jefferson, the document set out the colonies' grievances against King George III and declared that all people are created equal, possessing the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It became the founding document of the United States and remains one of the most influential statements of liberty and self-government in history.
