In 1777, during the revolutionary war, British troops attacked a supply depot in Danbury Connecticut. The following day continental troops assembled, and attacked the British troops on their march back to Long Island Sound.
The American troops were commanded by General Wooster. He split the force, and sent half the men under the command of Benedict Arnold to Ridgefield Connecticut. The other half stayed with Wooster.
Wooster and his men attacked the British column north of Ridgefield. They hoped to delay them long enough for more reinforcements to arrive. These attacks gave Benedict Arnold enough time to construct a barricade across the main street in Ridgefield. Eventually the British overran the Americans, and marched back to Long Island Sound. This battle was the only inland battle in Connecticut during the Revolutionary War. Other attacks took place in the colony, but they occurred along the coast.
